JABOWA was developed in 1970 by Daniel B. Botkin, theoretical physicist James F. Janak, and hydrologist James R. Wallis, as a summer project at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. It continues to be used widely around the world, with more than 50 versions. It is one of the best validated environmental forecasting models. One of the most recent papers continues that validation: Ngugi, Michael R. and Daniel B. Botkin, 2011, “Validation of a multispecies forest dynamics model using 50-year growth from Eucalyptus forests in eastern Australia,” Ecological Modelling. 222: 3261– 3270.
